Detailed Conversation Highlights
Jenean describes herself as being a strong introvert. She recalls her introverted tendencies even in childhood. Over time, her increased understanding of introversion allowed her to see how important contemplative “alone time” is to artists. Jenean was one of the early pioneers responsible for today’s adult coloring book craze. Seeking to apply her background in surface design after being inspired by one of her childhood coloring books, she soon learned that she could self-publish her work through Amazon’s Createspace as opposed to dealing with publishers and other middlemen.
Adult coloring books have become increasingly popular, offering calm and focus, two states that entrepreneurs can lose connection with. Jenean shares how she coped with an increase in exposure because of the success of her books and how she discovered what methods were the most comfortable. She found that some social media outlets, for example, may be more compatible with how you share information. When dealing with people, getting to know who they are before you even speak can build rapport and make the approach less intimidating. It’s also important to realize that an artist’s entrepreneurial endeavors are just as valid as those in other fields. It is important to keep an open mind in regards to opportunities to grow and leverage your talents, as well as opportunities to make money.
