Detailed Conversation Highlights
Pete describes himself as a natural introvert that switches to an extroverted state seamlessly in certain situations such as public speaking. However, he feels that many activities still bring out his introverted side, such as sales calls or networking events. Ironically, some aspects of public performance feel natural to introverts. Although we usually hear the introvert/extrovert spectrum used to describe personality types, they can also be used to describe cultures. The US is known generally for being a very extroverted culture, and even though the UK can seem introverted by comparison, the influence of US culture and corporate practices has left its mark on many parts of the world. Regardless of where cultures fall on the spectrum, paying close attention to the social norms of another culture is of the utmost importance if you’re working to establish a global presence.
The lines between the corporate and entrepreneurial worlds are becoming increasingly blurred. In spite of this, a lot of entrepreneurs lose sight of the big picture and operate within close networks as opposed to expanding their reach. You can take your venture to the next level by using the media as a catalyst for success. If you become an expert in a medium with far-reaching influence, you can be recognized as such in record time with a huge audience. If you present yourself (or have someone else represent you) in a manner that is knowledgeable yet charismatic, you’ll have a much greater impact. It’s important to make sure that you give journalists all the important details of who you are and what you do instead of trusting them to do it. One of the best ways to go about getting media attention early on is to establish a unique take on whatever subject you’re involved in. Never underestimate the power of sound bites.
